Naropa University International Grants in the USA for 2023/2024 – Scholarships To Study Abroad

Naropa University is a private university located in Boulder, Colorado. It was founded on the 14th of April 1974 through Tibetan Buddhist teacher Chogyam Trungpa It was named for the 11th century Indian Buddhist sage Naropa, an abbot from Nalanda.

The university describes itself as Buddhist-inspiring secular, ecumenical and nonsectarian instead of Buddhist. Naropa University encourages non-traditional activities such as meditation, to complement traditional methods of learning.

Naropa was accredited in 1988 by Naropa was accredited by North Central Association of Colleges and Schools in 1988, which made the first Buddhist-inspired academic institution to gain United States regional accreditation.

The school is among the few schools. Naropa University has hosted some Beat poets under the aegis of the Jack Kerouac school of Disembodied Poetry.

Naropa University was formed by Chogyam Trungpa, an exiled Tibetan tulku who was a Karma Kagyu and Nyingma lineage holder. Trungpa arrived in the USA in the year 1970. He founded the Vajradhatu group in 1973, and in 1974, he established the Naropa Institute under the Nalanda Foundation.

In the beginning in the beginning, at first, Nalanda Foundation and Vajradhatu were closely linked, and had similar directorships. Then, in the years following they became more independent organizations.

Furthermore, Trungpa asked poets Allen Ginsberg, Anne Waldman, Diane di Prima, and the composer John Cage to discover a poetry department at Naropa in the summer’s first session.

Ginsberg and Waldman who lived together during the summer of their first meeting and created the name of the Jack Kerouac Institute of Disembodied Poetics. Naropa University’s initial degrees were launched between 1975 and 1976. The programs included an undergraduate degree in Buddhist studies and visual art, MA in psychology, MFA in visual art and certificates for expressive arts in theater, dance, and poetry.

This MA of psychology originally developed to complement Trungpa’s Maitri program, which is a 16-week meditation program that was which was offered in Connecticut and was based on Vajrayana principles on esoteric energies and patterns that run through the body and mind.

Additionally, Trungpa asked Marvin Casper to reformulate the Maitri program to be used in Naropa University as a full-fledged master’s degree program in contemplative psychology.

Casper took over as chair this department, and edit two of Trungpa’s works. The original plan for the degree was that students had to take part in three institute’s summer sessions, complete two Maitri courses in Connecticut and finish the six-month independent research.

In 1977, on the urging of Naropa’s leaders, Naropa’s leadership took the decision to apply for regional accreditation. Evaluation visits continued until 1986 and, in the year 1988 Naropa Institute received accreditation from the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.

Additionally, in the mid-1980s Naropa’s president, Barbara Dilley, asked Lucien Wulsin to serve as chairperson of the Board of Directors. One of Lucien’s initial actions was to formalize the separation of Naropa and Vajradhatu.

Connections to Vajradhatu were also hampered by moving Vajradhatu’s principal centre to Halifax followed due to the death of Trungpa in 1987.

In 1991 , Naropa’s board trustees hired John Cobb, a Harvard-educated lawyer and practicing Buddhist as its the president. Thomas B. Coburn served as president from 2003 until 2009, being succeeded by Stuart C. Lord in July of 2009.

The university began engaging in electrophysiology studies at The Graduate School of Counseling and Psychology in 2012, when the university set up new equipment to aid in studying heart rate variability, galvanic skin reaction and respiration starting in 2012 until 2014.

Later, Jordan Quaglia, Ph.D. founded the Cognitive and Affective Sciences Laboratory to study Electroencephalography (EEG) to monitor brainwave patterns in 2016 – 2017.



The winners from Naropa University International Grants will be awarded a sum ranging between $3,000 and $10,000 to finish your studies within the USA.
